Muscle Cell Physiology

The Laboratory of MuscleCell Physiology, directed by professor Enrique Jaimovich and Dr. Mariana Casas, investigates the mechanisms of adaptation of skeletal muscle cells to different stimuli.

They have developed the topic of excitation-transcription coupling; that is, how the electrical stimulation of the muscle cell, an exercise model, regulates gene expression and thus its particular phenotype.

These studies have been considered pioneers in the field and in the last years have been extended to demonstrate the importance of these mechanisms during aging and various diseases that affect skeletal muscle, such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy and insulin resistance, astate previousto type 2 diabetes mellitus.
